Avner Cohen

The best bird of April 2006 was probably the Black-crowned Sparrow-lark found at the Km 19 cowshed, a super confiding bird that showed up for three days and allowed several Israeli birders to catch up with this great Lark species.

Below is a summary featuring the most interesting observations from this month, based on reports from the ISRABIRDNET mailing list and other sources.

Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus): 4 off Eilat's north beach, 04/Apr (B. Granit, R. Livne, T. Landsberger); Singles seen there throughout the month.

Red-billed Tropicbird (Phaethon aethereus): 1-2 seen off Eilat's north beach on the 9th, 15th and 17th of April.

Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster): The bird reported since early March is still seen perching and hunting around Eilat's shore.

Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor): The 1st for Israel found in March is still present at the Km 20 saltpans and was seen by many Israeli and visiting birders.

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina): 1 female at the Hula reflooded area, 04/Apr (L. Evans et al.).

Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis): 1 adult at Km 19 area, 10/Apr (J. Meyrav et al.).

Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae): 2 migrating over the Golan heights on 26th (B. Granit) and on the 27th (I. Shanni) of April.

Demoiselle Crane (Anthropoides virgo): 1 adult at the Hula reflooded area, 02-07/Apr (E. Palmer, P. Dalton, O. Campbell, J. Kerr et al.). Possibly the same bird that was reported from the Arava Valley at the end of March.

Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus): 1 off Eilat's north beach, 15/Apr (A. Shoresh, T. Landsberger).

Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus): A superb male at Km 76, 19/Apr (A. Ben Dov, T. Landsberger), showing extremely well but unfortunately disappearing the next day.

Sociable Lapwing (Vanellus gregarius): The tame individual reported on March from Lotan was last seen on 03/Apr (E. Vanunu, D. Standing et al.).

Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus): high numbers during the second half of the month, including 26 on 15th (R. Mizrachi, B. Granit, T. Landsberger) and 22 on the 18th (A. Ben Dov, T. Landsberger).

Pomarine Skua (Stercorarius pomarinus): good numbers during southernly storms, including a flock of 8 on 14/Apr (R. Mizrachi, R. Livne, B. Granit, T. Landsberger).

Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus): same adult bird from March was seen again during a southern storm off Eilat's north beach, 04/Apr (B. Granit, R. Livne, T. Landsberger); 1 juv there on 15/Apr (R. Mizrachi, B. Granit, T. Landsberger).

Common Gull (Larus canus): 1 at Ma'agan Michael fishponds, 01/Apr (Y. Dax); 1 1st summer bird at Ma'agan Michael Beach, 12-21/Apr (B. Granit); Another individual there on the 20/Apr (E. Vanunu).

White-cheeked Tern (Sterna repressa): The first for the season was reported from Eilat's north beach on 16/Apr (B. Granit et al.).

Caspian Tern (Sterna caspia): 1 adult at the northern Sea of Galilee, 30/Apr (A. Geffen).

Black Tern (Chlidonias niger): 1 at Atlit saltpans, 29/Apr (A. Ben Dov).

Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus): 1 at wadi Amud on 07/Apr (A. Ben Dov) and 1 at upper wadi Dishon on 14/Apr (P. Geffen). 2 weeks after the latest date mentioned in The Bird of Israel.

Egyptian Nightjar (Caprimulgus aegyptius): 1 female at Ne'ot Ha'Kikkar, southern dead-sea, 24/Apr (Y. Perlman).

Oriental Skylark (Alauda gulgula): 1 at km 77, 3/Apr (E. Vanunu, D. Standing); 1-2 at Yotvata's circular field, 16/Apr (E. Vanunu).

Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix nigriceps): A showy male was found behind the cowshed in Km 19 on 15/Apr, and stayed for two days (S. Olchewski et al.).

Thick-billed lark (Ramphocoris clotbey): 2 males and 3 females at km 76, 20/Apr (J. Meyrav et al.).

Hoopoe Lark (Alaemon alaudipes): 1-2 birds seen briefly at the Km 77 green patch, 03/Apr (E. Vanunu, D. Standing); Several additional sightings from Samar area were reported by foreign birders.

Rock Martin (Hirundo fuligula obsoleta): A new breeding site was discovered in the city of Modiin, a few kilometer outside the regular range of this desert species (Y. Kiat, Y. Setti).

Mourning Wheatear (Oenanthe lugens): 1 near the Hazeka ridge, Golan heights, presumably the northern-most record of this species in Israel (I. Shanni et al.)

Red-breasted Flycatcher (Ficedula parva): 1-2 birds at the pine park in Mitzpe Ramon, 21-28/Apr (A. Cohen et al.).

Rose-coloured Starling (Sturnus roseus): 1 adult at the 'Bahad 1' sewage, 18/Apr (A. Ben Dov, T. Landsberger); 5 birds along the southern Arava, 23/Apr (J. Meyrav).

Cinereous Bunting (Emberiza cineracea): The 2 birds reported from the football field at Mitzpe Ramon were last seen on 07/Apr (A. Cohen, L. Kislev, S. Haham); 1 semenowi at wadi Ashosh, 19/Apr (J. Meyrav); 1 near Mt. Varda, north Golan heights (I. Shanni).
