Photographic Handbook of the Birds of the Western Palearctic


The Handbook team has established a Western Palearctic Photo Collection of almost all the bird species, races and plumage variations that occur in the region. More than 100 photographers have already contributed to the collection, including many of the most experienced and talented in Europe. Before the spring is ended and birds gets too worn, it's time to list few species that it will be good if photographers can try to photo in the next few days or so.

Below is the list of species missing from Israel:

- Horned Lark - Images requested: E. a. bicornis of Lebanon and Syria/N Israel. Sharp and useful photographs of breeding male and female and also fresh autumn birds are welcome. Please try to photo them now before the horns gets broken!

- Barn Swallow - Image requested: rufous-bellied birds from Jordan Valley in Israel (some variation).

- Olive-tree Warbler - spring/summer (fresh) breeders; autumn (worn ad and fresh 1stW).

- Upcher's Warbler - Images requested: spring/summer (fresh) breeders.

- Basra Reed Warbler - Images requested: any good ones in the field.

- River Warbler - Images requested: a bird on the ground, or in shrubbery, showing typical skulking posture.

- Sardinian Warbler momus - Images requested: ads and 1stYs (both sexes) in autumn (fresh) and spring (worn); juv.

- Eastern Orphean Warbler - Images requested: ads and 1stYs (both sexes), spring (worn) and autumn (fresh); juv.

- Semi-collared Flycatcher - Images requested: ads, 1stW and 1stS of the two sexes, spring but especially of autumn birds.

- Collared Flycatcher - Images requested: full ad male in spring/summer (with black primaries); summer female in profile; autumn ads and 1stW female.

- Middle Eastern/Asian Crimson-winged Finch - Images requested: breeding ads and 1stS, of both sexes; fresh/winter ads (both sexes) and 1stWs (both sexes); also in flight; juv.

- Trumpeter Finch - Images requested: breeding male from Middle East (crassirostris); dull winter birds, esp. 1stWs; juv; bird(s) in flight.

- Syrian Serin - Images requested: bright breeding ad male (showing front and profile), also female and some variation; winter ads and 1stWs (both sexes for all ages); also flocks; juv.

- Tristram's Starling - Image requested: typical flying flock.
